11-Step Home Construction Process
Here are the 11 steps of the home building process that lead to your new home being built, finished, and ready to move in.

Preparing For Your New Home Construction
These steps are your responsibility, with our help every step of the way.

1. To build a new home on your lot, you must first purchase the land. (Or choose a lot and our affiliate will help with financing of the land and the home.)

2. Sign a contract with us for the construction of your new home. We can handle your mortgage financing in-house if you own your land free and clear, often with no money down.

3. Prepare the building site, including land clearing and grading, and staking out the location where the home will be built. We recommend meeting with your construction manager before you begin site preparation.

New Home Construction
We handle the actual construction of your home, from start to finish.

4. Permitting. We'll take care of final details, such as building permits and scheduling a pre-construction meeting to ensure the details of your new home's building plans are exactly as requested.

5. Lay the foundation. The first part of your new home's construction will be laying the foundation. Pier or piling foundations are standard for Jim Walter Homes, although other options may be available. These are discussed in detail when you choose the options for your new home.

6. Construct the frame of your new home. At this point, we conduct the framing inspection and walk-through, an important meeting with a Jim Walter Homes employee to ensure everything is as you asked, and all your questions are answered. As an expert home builder, we are always working to keep you informed.

7. Add the roof, siding, windows, and doors. At this point, if you bought a shell home, it is ready to be tendered — or turned over — to its owner.

New Home Builder Finishing Work
8. Install wire and pipe for electricity and plumbing. Install the wires and pipes that connect your electricity and plumbing, known as "rough" electric and plumbing.

9. Hang drywall, insulation, install baseboards and interior doors and trim.

10. Install flooring, fixtures and appliances and paint interior.

New Home Construction Is Complete - The House is Yours!

11. Once your home is completed according to your contract, we tender the home to you.

A word on subcontractors
Like most homebuilders, Jim Walter Homes uses qualified subcontractors to build your home. They are not employees of Jim Walter Homes, which is an advantage because it saves you money. But they — and we, in turn — ensure they will do quality work, and do it on time.
